Hi there,

As most of you probably know, I spent a couple of months of the last year working at an organization called SKIP (Supporting Kids in Peru). The experience that I had at SKIP was truly life changing, as terrible a cliché as that is, and it showed me just how different lives can be. Let me give you a little bit of background about the organization:
SKIP works in El Porvenir, a district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Trujillo is one of the largest cities in Peru, and it sprawls in the desert with a population of somewhere around 900,000. The inhabitants of El Porvenir are mostly immigrants from the mountains or the jungle who have come to the Big City for the chance at a better life, but when they arrive, the chances just aren’t there. SKIP works with these families, in a really holistic way. It pays matriculation fees for the children, who would otherwise not be able to enroll in school (public school is not free in Peru), as well as buying them shoes, uniforms, and school supplies. SKIP has an economic development program, which gives microcredit loans as well as teaching marketable skills, helping parents navigate the job market, etc. There is a nursery, an adult literacy program, and they have even started a garden for the SKIP families. The organization as a whole really works to help these people to improve their own situation, rather than just showing up and giving them free stuff. This is, as I’m sure you can see, an organization that I really believe in. I’ve seen just how much good SKIP is doing in El Porvenir, and it is a truly staggering amount. All of this information, put in much more eloquently, can be found at www.skipperu.org.
Anyway, I feel so strongly about this NGO that I am returning in January. I would really like to return with something more to offer than just my willing hands; namely cash. My goal is to raise $1,567, which is the cost to enroll the 365 SKIP kids in school per year. The cost would normally be higher, but SKIP has an agreement with a couple of local schools that allows for reduced matriculation fees in exchange for SKIP volunteers offering English courses in these schools (oh hey, I did that!). In short, I am asking all of you to help me to realize this goal. I understand that these are tough economic times, but please believe me when I say that every little bit helps. It costs about $4 for a student to enroll in school for a year, so know that your contribution, however small, will make a difference in a child’s life.
Thank you so much for all of your support!
     Jean-Claire Peltier.
