My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am running the Brighton Half Marathon to raise money for the sanctuary at Raystede. Raystede rescue, rehabilitate and rehome many animals. I am running, specifically, for the chickens that Raystede rescue.
There are around 30 million chickens in this country and 85% of them are kept in Battery Farms. The minimum legal requirement of space for one chicken is just under three quarters of the size of an A4 piece of paper. The majority of Battery Farms have 4 or 5 chickens per cage, which are approximately 20 inches x 20 inches. Chickens will usually spend 72 weeks in these conditions before they are sent to slaughter. Many of the methods of slaughter are cruel but I will not go into them here as it is too unpleasant.
Over 2 million chickens die in their cages each year from diseases that are caused by the improper control of faeces cleaning. If they survive their 72 weeks (laying an average of 338 eggs per year), most of them are suffering from brittle bones caused by standing on the wire bottoms of their cages.
The money I am hoping to raise will enable Raystede to rescue more battery hens and give them a better life. Any money you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
