JENNY RUNDLE’S 23 Km SKI RACE 5 February 2012
New: Race Report below - see new Photos
Thank you for looking at my webpage. With your help I am hoping to raise at least £5,000 as part of the annual Royal Marines Association (RMA) fundraising effort in its support of the Royal Marines Charity, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund: http://www.rmctf.org.uk/ (RMCTF). I have chosen to do it through the RMA because the East Anglia Region of the RMA has kindly agreed to support me by making my Ski Race its fundraising focus for the early part of 2012. We all hear of the deaths of Royal Marines, and see the sad repatriation ceremonies on TV, but can little imagine how the bereaved families are supposed to cope with their loss. More numerous than those killed in action, the many Royal Marines who suffer life-changing injuries rarely make the headlines, but their needs are often far beyond what is otherwise available. The Royal Marines have a family ethos, and in response to these challenges, the RMA has in recent years given, and continues to give, amazing support to whoever needs it within the extended Royal Marines family. The recent high tempo of operations, with most of the Corps’ combat units having been deployed to Afghanistan in the last year, means that the RMA need all the help they can get with their fund-raising, so that the RMA and the RMCTF, can continue with their fantastic work.
Why a Ski Race?
My husband served for 33 years in the Royal Marines, thankfully with hardly a scratch, but I am constantly reminded of those who have not been so fortunate. Having lived wherever he was posted, I found myself in Norway for three years and later in Bavaria for nearly six. I got hooked on cross-country skiing in Norway, but it was in Bavaria at the age of 49 I somehow conceived the mad idea that I could actually compete in the World Cup long distance Cross-Country Skiing event which is held annually in Oberammergau: the König Ludwig Lauf - http://www.koenig-ludwig-lauf.com/ In each of the six years I have competed I have raised money for charity, but this is the big one, (as it may be my last time).
Well… it’s finally over! The race was even more of a challenge than I had expected it to be after a four-year gap since the last one. The hills are just as steep as I remembered, but this year the Europe-wide cold snap threw in an extra dimension which made the race exceptionally tough. Training on the tracks, at altitude, for a total of 77 Km during the week before the race was essential preparation, which proved only just enough on the day itself. The race before mine saw a total of 38 people driven, or in some cases airlifted, to hospital with freezing injuries. My race started at 1300 on Sunday 5 February in a temperature of -17°C but into a strong headwind which made things much worse. Later, the wind dropped a little, but the temperature never rose above -11°C, and even for the front runners, really quick times were just not possible. Some contestants withdrew during the race because of the low temperatures, but a much larger number chose not to compete at all. Of the 519 competitors who finished (while not actually close behind the 21 year-old athlete who won the women’s race) my own race time of 2 hours 47 min 53.9 seconds doesn’t look too bad against the time of the very last person to finish (at 4 hours 19 min 49 sec) and I am very pleased that I managed to rank 6 in my age-group. The photos should give you a flavour of the race.
To all those who have already sent me their sponsorship money: Thank you, and I hope you now feel the challenge and my chosen charity has fully justified your support. To those of you who have promised to donate after I had actually completed the event – please donate now.
Donating through my JustGiving page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity, and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s a very efficient way to donate - I raise more by reaching more donors, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
The Royal Marines’ wounded and the bereaved families need your help, so please dig deep and donate what you can now. Thank you.
