As most of you know I recently began a year's sabbatical and am currently teaching in a wonderful school in Guatemala. I am working for the Phoenix Project which educates indigenous children throughout Latin America. Having been here for several weeks, I cannot emphasise enough how special this project is. Without it, these children would not receive an education or even experience a childhood. The local communities are extremely deprived and the children lack most basic amenities. The schools give the kids the opportunity to build a better life for themselves whilst also having fun, making friends and learning rather than working all day at home and in the fields. The children really thrieve at school and put so much love and energy into everything they do!
The Phoenix Project is run and funded by volunteers from around the world and in an effort to try and raise additional funds for this amazing project, a group of us are taking on the Volcano Challenge. We will be attempting to climb four of Guatemala's largest volcanoes over 5 days, including an active volcano (from which lava is always oozing and there are rumours of an immenent erruption!) and Tajumulco (Central America's highest point at 4,219 m / 13,842 ft), and even camping at the summit of two of them!
All of the money raised will go directly to the project so anything you can spare would make a real difference in helping these most deserving children. If you would like any additional information on the project please email me on jennythomas21@hotmail.com.
