Hey all!!!! As you know I am currently teaching in a school in the village San Andrés Itzapa, one of 7 schools in , run and funded by volunteers from around the world.
Well.... in November me and 10 other brave volunteers are going on a 6 day trek via 4 of ’s volcanoes......in aid of raising money for these schools.
We start off from to climb Pacaya (2552m. / 8373ft.) , one of the 3 active volcanoes that frame the town. In fact, rumours of an imminent eruption are circulating at the moment so lets hope it holds out for a couple more months! It is always oozing lava anyway so we are guarantied some beautiful views and a toasty climb with roasted marshmallows the whole way up!.
Our second quest is , the 3rd highest volcano in at . We reach the summit and set up camp and watch the very active Fuego spewing out smoke plumes.
Day three and we head back down and head to the base camp of ’s highest volcano Tajumulco 4219m. / 13,842ft. We spend the night at base camp ready for our ascent the next day, probably wondering if we will all make it or be held back by altitude sickness. The aim is to camp at the summit of Tajumulco, with views of most of ! This is going to be a chilly night!!!
Our last little challenge is San Pedro 3,020 meters (9,908 ft)) which will hopefully seem like a breeze after spending a night at ! This volcano looks over and should be a beautiful climb.
Although this challenge is going to be a fantastic experience, the reason we are putting ourselves through this ordeal and taking time out from teaching for a week is for the children. They have nothing. By attending our schools they are not only being given the option of a life different to their parents if they choose, but they are also gaining a childhood. The hours they spend in our schools they are having fun, learning, making friends. When they are not in school they are working in the fields, running errands for their parents and living in conditions that would not be acceptable anywhere in the or most of the western world.
They children are SO happy in school, and I am asking if you will be able to spare a couple of pounds to help us run the schools in . All the money goes directly to the Global Vision International Charitable Trust and will be used directly for the GVI project where I am volunteering.
If you want any more information just give me an email (jenn_yfar@hotmail.com) or I also have a Guatemalan phone number (42355864) or Skype (Jennifer.stride)! I also have tones of photos that I would love to share when I can get this page to work!! But I can also send you a link to all my photos of the school and children which is on Snapfish!
I am aiming to raise around 500 pounds...more would be amazing!!! I am funding the actual trip myself so that any money I raise will go straight to the project.
