Please help me raise money for medical equipment for the people of Kenya
Where am I going?
In September I am taking a career break from my job as a Cardiac Physiologist to volunteer with IcFEM, an indigenous Kenyan mission organisation based in Kimilili, Western Kenya whose motto is ‘Holy living and hard work’. Their aim is to transform the rural communities of this region of western Kenya by providing substantial support and training in key areas including health, education, sports projects, agriculture, welfare and relief.
What will I be doing?
My time will be spent helping in Dreamland Medical Care Centre (DMCC) situated about 2 miles from Kimilili . DMCC has become well known for its high standards of care and cleanliness, and has established a reputation for dignified, compassionate care. In addition to receiving treatment people are also taught about improving their general health and nutrition.
There is huge poverty and great need in this rural region of Kenya. Many people are too poor to travel from their remote villages to hospital, let alone pay for medical treatment. As well as the services provided at DMCC, the mission is now running medical outreach clinics in the local units. During my time one of my roles will be to teach first aid alongside the medical outreach clinics and empower and educate people to take responsibility of their own health and the health of others. I would like to donate a first aid kit to each of the local units. A radiologist from the UK, who has retired to work with IcFEM, has already begun the process of teaching one of the Kenyan doctors ultrasound and I aim to develop this further. I also hope to get the portable defibrillator working and train the hospital staff in its use as well as continuing the teaching on ECG interpretation begun during my visit last year.
Please help with funds for medical equipment
I would like to ask for you help in raising the funds to obtain more vital medical equipment for the hospital. In particular, if funding allows I would like to purchase a portable ultrasound machine that has just been manufactured. This is a revolutionary piece of equipment not only because it is so small and portable (about the size of an ipod) but also because it can be charged up and could be used in mobile clinics where there is no electricity.
I am incredibly grateful for your support and very excited about this fantastic opportunity I have to work with this fantastic organisation again. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you on my return.
