I know that there are so many good causes out there that need our support and that people have different reasons for supporting their chosen charities. I am passionate about trying to protect and preserve our amazing planet and the wildlife that we can easily take for granted.

In November I will be taking part in a charity trek in Borneo with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). I am paying for the cost of the trip myself and ALL funds raised through this page and my other fundraising events will go to help with the care and preservation of the orangutans in Borneo at the WSPA-funded Nyaru Menteng sanctuary. It is the world’s largest orangutan sanctuary and rehabilitation project, where over 1,000 traumatised orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for and helped along their journey towards rehabilitation into the wild. Orangutans are among the ten most threatened animals in the world and this problem is increasing as Borneo now provides over 80% of the global demand for palm oil. The rainforests are being destroyed to make way for the lucrative palm oil plantations and the orangutan population are suffering as a result.

This trek in itself is a massive challenge as it is graded harder than the Kilimanjaro trek by the adventure company that we are going with. It will be extremely physically gruelling as we trek through unmapped rain forests of the Kalimantan area. We will be climbing mountains as high as Ben Nevis in extremely high temperatures and humidity. That is before you throw in the leeches, spiders and other rain forest nasties into the equation.

Borneo will be tough enough but in an attempt to raise further sponsorship money and prove my dedication to the cause, I am also doing the Great North Run in September!!! Now clearly I am not a natural athlete and this is going to be a HUGE undertaking for me.
