Our son Jake Baker was born at 29 weeks gestation weighing a tiny 2lb 4oz on the 24th September 2011. He was so tiny, unlike anything we had ever seen before yet so perfect. For three weeks Jake done amazing, going from strength to strength, gaining weight slowly and breathing on his own with no ventilation at three days old, things were going so well and the doctors were totally impressed with Jake's progress untill October 2011.

Jake's tummy started to swell for ten days doctors were unsure what was going on untill Jake was diagnosed with Necrotising Enterocolitis, he became extremely sick and within 24 hours we were told Jake needed an operation to remove part of his bowel that had became inflammed, the reason for this being he was so premature that his gut was not yet ready to digest milk so the intestines became swollen. We were told unless Jake had this operation he would not survive, problem being the hospital we were at was not able to operate on Jake he needed to be transferred to Kings College in London which was over an hours drive from where we were. Jake deteriorated rapidly we were told to call the family in to say their goodbyes as Jake was not going to pull through, we were all devastated. We were waiting by Jakes incubator for what we thought was going to be the end when a surgeon came over, he was there from great ormand street and was looking at a little girl who needed a heart operation, he had a look at Jake and asked for our permission to do something on Jake he had never done before, he asked to make two holes in Jakes abdomen using a scalpel to drain the infection which had built up, by this point Jake's intestines had burst, he was paralysed to ease the pain. The surgeon told us this small operation would either save Jake's life or end things there and then, We agreed to let him proceed, it was our only hope. Amazingly the operation worked, we were rushed to Kings College and Jake underwent 6 hours of surgery losing 70cm of small intestines, Jake was left with his intestines on the outside of his body to rest them and let them heal. Over the next six months Jake remained in intensive care having numerous more problems, contracting MRSA, liver failure, enlarged ventricles on the brian, a small hole in his heart, 17 blood transfusions and a terrible infection in the longline that was running right next to his heart, Jake needed resuscitating on numerous occasions because the infection made him extremely poorly yet again. Unbelievably Jake recovered from all of this, his intestines were put back into his tummy in February and we were discharged from hospital on the 15th March 2012.

During our entire stay we stayed at the Ronald McDonald house in Camberwell, it was absolutely fantastic, the staff were lovely and comforted us through out the entire time, the house was beautiful and it was such a comfort to us to be staying with other families that were also going through hard times like us. This charity is a total god send, we would never have coped without the comfort of this house so please find it in your hearts to dig deep and donate to them, any amount would be muchly apprecaited, help other families during such a difficult time.

Thankyou
