Well the Marathon is fast approaching & I realised it was about time I started raising some money so here's my just giving page. The months of training are starting to take their toll, but a recent trip to the physio seems to have sorted me out and I'm hoping to get my training back on-track for the remaining few weeks.

All donations are very welcome and will be hugely appreciated by the charity I'm running for.

I am running for a small charity called AMREF who provide health care to African communities by training health workers, supplying drugs, providing a Flying Doctor and providing access to clean water. They are an African charity, staffed mainly in Africa and train African people to take care of themselves.

In the UK there is one doctor for every 435 people. In Sudan there is one doctor for every 100,000 people. Some people have to walk for days to access even the most basic health care. When they get there, the health workers may not have the skills required and are overworked; their equipment is old and there are no drug supplies.

Health spending in Africa is woefully inadequate. The continent bears 25% of the global burden of disease, but only 3% of the world’s health workers, paid with less than 1% of global health expenditure.

What your money could buy…

£5 could pay for radio airtime to broadcast health messages, and let people know when AMREF specialist health teams will be visiting the area.

£10 could train a Community Health Worker to recognise the symptoms of common childhood diseases and how to prevent them.

£10 could turn a child into a teacher; providing learning materials that children can use to educate their peers on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation.

£15 could train a nurse to provide aftercare to surgical patients in rural clinics.

£20 could buy enough mosquito nets to protect four families from malaria (the biggest child killer in Africa).

£30 could save the sight of 10 people who are suffering from blinding trachoma.

£30 could equip a rural health centre with basic supplies and drugs for a month.

£30 could provide a midwife with the books and other learning materials they need to complete their 18 month training.

£40 could buy a bicycle for a dedicated Community Health Worker, enabling him or her to see more patients during their rounds.

£50 could build four latrines in an urban slum, improving hygiene and preventing the spread of disease.

£60 could purchase a special ‘medikit’ for a doctor, nurse or midwife to use on their rounds, this includes equipment and medicine.
