Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On Saturday 24 October, I took part in the Original Mountain Marathon-in the Brecon Beacons- I was running with my Friend Laurence Trim and we had to carry a pack with our tent, bedding, food and water- at the start of the race we were given a map and were navigating with a compass- .We were given water at the overnight camp but otherwise had to be self-sufficient.
The OMM is a 2 day event- I found day 1 the toughest physical challenge I have ever had to face- although a 25 km distance 'as th ecrow flies', we actually ran close to 25 miles in just under 7.5 hours; the terrain we ran on was boggy and the most difficult sections were tussocks about 2-3 feet high; it felt like running through treacle! Having arrived at overnight camp, the evening meal was very welcome and the malt whisky minature I had packed went down especially well!
Day 2 began early but unfortunately after about an hour, my running ( or by that stage limping!) was significantly impaired by a left knee sprain such that we had to withdraw- by the time we returned to camp , we had covered about 10km so whilst I was frustrated not to have finished the event, we did cover close to 45 km , not far short of the 50km target.
I am so grateful to all my generous sponsors in helping me to exceed my target - the total raised including 'offline' amounts is close to £2,000 for the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Foundation. I also want to thank my running partner Laurence, without whose map- reading skills, organisation and good humour I would have not have got very far. I am considering my next challenge!
