In glorious late summer weather, I cycled round as many historic Oxfordshire churches as I could on Saturday 12 September between 10am and 4pm: this was to raise money in particular for Swalcliffe Church, one of the churches where I am honorary curate, where the Tower Roof has now become dangerous and needs urgent repair. Swalcliffe Church is a beautiful building, which dates back to Saxon times, though most of the present building was completed in the 13th century, and the Tower in the 15th century. The total cost is likely to be around £160,000, approximately £50,000 of which will be contributed by English Heritage, but most of the rest will have to be raised locally. In a village of fewer than 100 dwellings, this will be no mean feat, and any help that you can give will be much appreciated.
My cycle ride aimed to cover at least 30 churches and in the event I managed 32. With steep hills between the villages, it was hard work for an unfit 57-year old.
