The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) was originally set up some 50 years ago to give support to orphaned elephants in Kenya and their rehabilitation back into the wild. The work of the Trust now encompasses support to all wildlife out there under the continuing leadership of Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick who is internationally recognised as an authority in this type of work and with elephants in particular.
Baby elephants in the wild are never abandoned by a parent, indeed their maternal and family instincts have been well documented. Unfortunately, ivory poaching has been on the increase in recent years resulting in the killing of many mature elephants. Many are first caught by snares and traps which can inflict serious injury and suffering to the animals before they are killed. The resulting orphans have little chance of survival in the wild if left to their own devices. This in turn has had a spiralling effect on the number of surviving elephants in the wild and even within Tsavo National Park. Without the intervention by the DSWT this situtation could easily endanger the very existence of elephants out there with tragic consequences.
If you would like more information regarding the work of the Trust I suggest you visit their website www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org The BBC have also featured the work of the Trust in a series of programmes called "Elephant Diaries". Further details available from www.elephantdiaries.org
The success and continuation of the Trust's work relies on funding from public sources. I am asking for your help as I believe this work is important and I admire the passion and perseverance displayed by the local people in Kenya who carry out this work on a daily basis under difficult conditions.
