My story
Between February 12th and July 3rd 2010, I completed a journey from Cairo to Cape Town, cycling over 8,000km to reach my destination, travelling through 10 countries. I thought that it would be a great way to see Africa - it was! I also decided to use the trip to raise awareness and money for International Childcare Trust, a fantastic charity that supports some of the world's poorest children. I was even lucky enough to make a visit to one of their projects in Mombasa, on the southern coast of Kenya, which you can read about here.
Having seen the activities that take place there, I can wholeheartedly say that the work being carried out at the centre is giving hope to hundreds of children that would otherwise be living in poverty - through healthcare, nutrition and education.
My bike and I travelled unsupported through mountain ranges and jungles, across deserts and great lakes, past ancient temples and wild beasts, a journey which I funded myself. If you are able to spare some cash in sponsorship of my journey, I would be most grateful, not to mention the children who will benefit around the world.
Here are just some examples of how far a bit of money will go:
If you give just £1 for every thousand miles that I cycled, this can help to give a child a safe environment to grow - £5 will will protect a child from abuse and exploitation for a month through ICT's outreach social workers and community centres and offer traumatised children counselling support.
£8 for every month spent by me on a saddle will help send a child to school - £40 will enable an orphaned child to buy school uniform and clothes. These basics allow orphans the opportunity to enrol in primary school and restart their lives.
£1 for each day of my journey can help to train youths for a brighter future - £150 would help to provide bursaries for three deprived young people looking for options for the future. They can benefit from skills training in cookery, sewing, mechanics, plumbing, English and computers.
If I raise enough:
£1,000 provides... the annual salary of a teacher at Kalki Drop-in Centre in Pondicherry – who helps provide remedial/life skills education for up to 300 street children each day.
£1,800 provides... medical check ups, basic treatment & hospital referrals for 150 children living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania each year.
Any amount will go some way to help some of the world's poorest children.
Thanks,
John
