Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. By donating through this page you can support the amazing work of the Greater Horn of Africa Rainwater Partnership (GHARP) who help poor, rural families in Kenya to improve their access to water for domestic, livestock and agricultural purposes. GHARP also support communities to gain the skills necessary to increase their income and to cultivate enough nutritious food to see them through the year.
For example, during times of drought in rural Kenya men take the cattle to look for pasture and leave dairy cows behind with the women and children. In these times of severe water scarcity dairy cows often die causing families to lose this vital asset and children to be deprived of milk - their key source of nutrition.
Therefore, GHARP particularly works to improve the nutrition of poor, rural children. One example of how they do this is by developing demonstration plots to show how using animal drawn implements to scratch the soil, fertilising with manure and sowing grass seeds can help to rehabilitate range lands. Encouraging haymaking using simple bailing machines and raised barns for effective storage helps to ensure that the dairy cows survive and produce the milk so vital to children's well being.
At the same time, female youth and women are being supported to develop nurseries of drought resistant tree and vegetable seedlings. These nurseries provide an alternative income generating opportunity and also help the families who buy the seeds to diversify their production, spread their risk and to improve family nutrition whilst sustainably improving watershed management.
The beneficial results of your support for these rainwater harvesting and livelihood improvement projects include a:
- reduction in water borne disease,
- improved family income and nutrition,
- watershed conservation,
- reduced conflict over pasture and water resources,
- strengthened community capacity to cope with unpredictable weather conditions.
Thank you
