My nursing career has been spent at the Royal Surrey and St Lukes hospital, starting as a staff nurse in theatres in 1989 to my current position as Matron of paediatrics. Over this time I have been very fortunate to be part of the teams that have successfully helped treat many people of all ages suffering from cancer; a great many of these patients have recovered and gone on to lead long lives and sadly some haven’t. All of us will know someone who has had cancer and one in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in our lives . My beautiful dad died of cancer at the age of 50, so I have some personal experience of the sadness it brings to families and their friends. St Luke’s cancer centre at Guildford is a Regional centre for treating and supporting patients and their families following a diagnosis of cancer. St Lukes needs to expand to be able to care for increasing numbers of patients and is currently looking at plans to extend the hospital building and its services.
