My story

Easter Monday - I have just completed the Devizes to Westminster canoe race. It took me a total of 21 hours 22 minutes 19 seconds, split over the 4 days. It has been an amazing experiance with ups and downs. When I left Devizes on Friday morning I was unsure that I would make it but I did, we arrived at 7.45 am under the London Eye today, having left Teddington at 5.45 am. Please see below the original details of the race.

This year I am taking part in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe marathon, which is an endurance race, 125 miles long with 75 portages (going around locks). I am paddling in a K2 with Micheal Punter (Grunt), we are both members of Banbury & District Canoe Cub. The event starts at the bottom of the Devizes lock flight, it includes going on the Kennet and Avon canal and then onto the Thames to finish outside the Houses of Parliament.

We will be doing this over 4 days - on the first day 34 miles, then 35 miles, then 37 miles and finally on the Monday, the last stretch is on the tidal section of the Thames, which means we start when the tide is high tide. On Easter Monday this means starting at 4.30am!! Over the whole weekend we aim to do it in under 24 hours.  I have been doing specific training for this event and I hope to complete it, which will be a big achievement before I go to university in September.

I have choosen Myeloma UK due to my mum's friend, Hilary, being diagnosed with Myeloma in July 2006. Myeloma is a rare cancer of blood plasma cells, which can cause bone pain and fractures, kidney damage, anaemia and fatigue. It is treatable, but as yet there is no cure. Any money raised will go towards supporting patients with myeloma and their families and friends and funds research into new treatments.
