Action for Children in Conflict(AfCiC)

Action for Children in Conflict works to transform the lives of children affected by various forms of conflict or crisis be it war, extreme poverty, hunger, illness, persecution, or neglect. AfCiC's projects focus on helping some of the most disadvantaged, disenfranchised and socially excluded children and young people in Kenya. The children they work with come from backgrounds of abject poverty, family breakdown and abuse - both verbal and physical. They are in conflict with the law, living and working in the streets and have little or no access to formal education. Many resort to substance abuse as a means of escaping the cold and hunger which pervade their daily lives. AfCiC believe that these children and young people have the capacity to change their own lives for the better, and it is their role to nurture this process. AfCiC works alongside the children and young people, helping to transform them into responsible individuals and productive members of their community, and empowering them to make positive decisions about their futures.

:Just one of many, many case sudies-Paul's story

Paul is seven. Meningitis when he was four left him deaf and dumb. His mother has no regular work but many boyfriends. She couldn't cope with Paul and threw him out of the house. He lived on the streets of Thika for two years. Younger children on the streets are often sexually abused by older boys, cajoled into sniffing glue and used for errands and to beg.

Somehow Paul survived. When AfCiC found him he was malnourished, withdrawn and scared. With time and care he began to interact with staff and other children and to take an interest in education and games. For months his mother refused to talk to AfCiC about her son but she eventually started to take an interest in him.

Paul had a medical assessment and a boarding school for the deaf was recommended. AfCiC found a school and a sponsor to pay fees. Paul has completed his first term. He is thoroughly enjoying school, has picked up sign language quickly and is showing considerable academic promise. Paul's relationship with his mother is not close but they do have contact. When he visited AfCiC in the school holidays he was healthy, happy and communicative.

My story

Fifteen weeks ago i gave birth to our precious baby girl Ebony Rose and she means everything to us. My partner, myself, our family and friends give her as much love, care and attention as we possibly can. This makes it so hard when I hear about these children that AfCiC help. So on the 4th October I am taking part in the Baxters River Ness 10k run to raise as much money as I can for this charity(AfCiC). This is going to be a massive challenge for me so please, please sponser me. Even if it's a couple of pounds, everything helps. The charity(AfCiC) and myself will be very gratefull.

Lastly please wish me luck and thankyou very much.
