I started running in the summer of 2013 as a way to get out into the countryside, after my dog, Wilson, injured himself and was unable to go for walks.

Wilson came from The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare and picked us for his guardians when he was just 6 months old.  His background is not known, as he was found stray at around 5 months old, but he was skinny and clearly traumatised by mis-treatment, cowering if you raised your voice and terrified of being hit if you moved your hands too quickly. 

Despite all this, he was also a very loving, affectionate, friendly, energetic boy, keen to please and quick to learn and it didn't take long to earn his trust.  He also loved his long walks all over the South Downs and occasional trips to the New Forest.  He took part in several of the annual Kit Wilson Sponsored Dog Walks to raise money for the charity, usually covering at least 4 times as many as the 7 miles on the route plan!

Thankfully, Wilson is on the mend, after tearing both the cruciate ligaments in his back knees, one year apart from each other, and is now enjoying walks on the lead on even ground.  He has grown used to us having our walks together, then me going for a run on the South Downs, which is too uneven for him.

After competing in just one 10km (6 mile) race in April 2014, I signed up to run Brighton Marathon on 12 April 2015 - a big leap from 6 miles to 26.2 miles in just one year, but no bigger than the leap of faith required for Wilson to choose me to be his forever home.

I would love to raise some money for the Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare to help save other dogs like Wilson, who would likely have been put to sleep if not for them, as well as all the other animals they help, including cats and wildlife.
