Christopher and Mary Jenkin, pensioners from Cumbria, UK, are raising funds to build a Hostel and Training Centre for street kids in Kasese, Western Uganda.
They met some of these boys in February 2008 and learnt that they slept on the streets and ate from rubbish skips. Most were orphans, or had been dreadfully abused. The scheme is to build somewhere safe for them to stay, where they can get care and decent food, and be trained in trades like agriculture, woodwork or mechanics, with the younger ones being encouraged to go back into education.
The Hostel is nearly finished. The roof is on; doors and windows are fitted; electrical wiring including solar panels is fitted. Plumbing is almost finished, and will shortly be connected with mains water. But the concrete floors, and interior plastering and tiling, and exterior rendering, are all still to be done.
