Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As many friends and colleagues will know my Dad died on 8th March 2014.
He wasn’t just my Dad – he was my friend, my Scrabble partner, my bedtime story reader, my footie comrade, my betting tipster and the person most like me in the world.
Dad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer just 8 months before we lost him. It rapidly spread to his bones, lungs, spine and ultimately his brain – that’s when I lost my Dad.
Being a bit of a control freak, I experienced a huge personal battle to overcome the feeling of powerlessness: I always want to fix things. I couldn’t make Dad better but I can spend my life doing things to make him proud.
This year, on Father's Day (Sunday 15 June), I am donning a wetsuit and hurling myself into freezing water with hundreds of other crazy people to take on the challenge of swimming 1 mile in Lake Windermere (the obvious choice, given my lack of fitness and terrible phobia of open water).
Please help support me and the charity – either by donating or raising awareness of this cruel, debilitating disease that turns people’s lives upside down.
Men don’t talk about things, don’t go to the doctors, and tend to bury their heads in the sand. I challenge everyone to change this – if not for yourselves, for those who love you.
Bob Hoskins said “it’s good to talk”, it might not be good but it is important.
More information about prostate cancer can be found on their website http://prostatecanceruk.org/ so please visit and help to keep the men you love safe.
