My niece, Lily Thornton, was born with a rare immune system disorder called HLH. She was very ill, and had a life-saving bone marrow transplant on the 18th June 2009 which took place in Ward 23 of Newcastle General Hospital, known as 'The Bubble Unit'. The Unit treats babies and children from all over the UK who were born with defective immune systems, by bone marrow transplantation. It also treats children suffering from leukaemia, and severe forms of arthritis. The funds raised by the charity have contributed to a range of improvements in terms of research, medical care, and social and development needs of patients and families.
