As lots of you are aware, during my gap year I spent numerous months in Brasov, Romania working with youngsters from a wide range of backgrounds, however it was the disabled children of one orphanage in particular who stole my heart. When we first arrived in January 2007 I was shocked to see how poorly the children were being ‘looked after’ – left in their beds for 24 hours a day with no love or attention, some were even locked in rooms alone and others tied up because they posed a threat to themselves. Although this orphanage has now been re-located and big change was promised, when I returned in September 2008 I found that this was not the case at all. A lot of the remotely healthier children had deteriorated drastically and one little girl had lost so much weight she was almost unrecognisable. Also, despite previously loving human contact, she now seemed very afraid of anyone coming anywhere near her :(
On the positive side however, CHANGE IS ON THE HORIZON.... the wonderful charity, F.R.O.D.O (Foundation for the Relief Of Disabled Orphans - www.frodokids.org) have opted to work with these beautiful children, putting together a programme involving a multi-disciplinary team which will greatly improve their quality of life, provide them with adequate food and appropriate medication however, it’s going to cost roughly 57K to implement for one year...
So this is where you guys come in! Over the next few months I'll be organising lots of fund-raising activities (eg. Sposored walk - 3 highest peaks in South Wales) for you to get involved in or you can simply donate here.
