I’m not raising money for fantastic causes like Motor-Neurone Disease, Leukaemia or heart disease. If I was this would be easier. Those conditions, unlike mental health, don’t have stigma attached to them. Few people feel a sense of embarrassment or emotional discomfort when discussing the significance those conditions have. We shouldn’t feel those things when talking about mental health. But we do. Nothing should stop us from being able to talk fully and explore the issues going on in all our minds. But something does.

I am running this marathon for Mind to support their work in combating the stigma and assumptions surrounding mental health with cold hard facts. Their work supports people like me who experience anxiety. It helps people like my little sister who, in spite of being one of the most caring, vivacious and funny people I know, has to battle her own demons on a daily basis.

We all know someone who is dealing with mental health issues, or not dealing with them. For me, running is how I manage. I hope that by running this race and supporting Mind, it will help other people to find their ways of managing and find the help they need.
