Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Below is details of a charity I volunteered for last year. I took the time to befriend a young boy, it was a fantastic experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with him. We did things like going the park, the shows and the cinema, it was a privilege to make a difference in this young boys life.
Unfortunately due to work and college commitments I had to give up the befriending which was a hard decision to make but I would like to back to it at some point. So now I have decided to give something back and do The West Highland Way to raise money for the kids. The money will go towards a day out for the kids during the summer holidays and I have been invited to join them for the day.
This is a comment from one of the young people:-
"A young person aged 9 said it gives me the opportunity of meeting other young people on our outings and having fun. I like to talk to my befriender about what I’ve been doing that weekend and to have time out from my younger brother and sisters, it’s nice to have someone for me"
Community Service Volunteers
North Lanarkshire Befriending Project
History
The North Lanarkshire Befriending Project is a partnership between Community Service Volunteers (CSV) and the North Lanarkshire Social Work Department. The project was conceived in 1998 and began operating in 1999. The over-riding objective is to prevent vulnerable young people from becoming accommodated.
Objectives
CSV matches volunteer befrienders with children and young people from North Lanarkshire who need support. The young people are often socially isolated or would simply benefit by a break from the day-to-day pressure of life at home, in school, and in the greater community. By providing them with the input of a responsible adult, the project helps young people make positive changes in their lives, which will benefit themselves and the community.
The Befriending Project can help young people through difficult periods in their lives by providing them with positive adult role models and a person who can give them individual time. They spend a few hours together, once a week, doing activities such as swimming, skating, going to the pictures, having a burger, or simply taking a walk and having a chat. The outings provide the young people with respite, someone outwith their family and familiar statutory agencies that they can talk freely to, and at the very least a chance to get out of the house and have some fun. Ideally, the relationship will provide the young people with a steady and reliable influence, encourage them to become more active members of their community and broaden their interests through engagement in new experiences and opportunities.
CSV
CSV recruits, assesses and trains the volunteers. They are also responsible for the ongoing supervision and support of the volunteers in their matches with the young people. The project staff liase with social work referrers and undertake the day-to-day administration of the programme, including the management and disbursement of expenses to the volunteers.
