As you probably know I am currently volunteering for an amazing project near Antigua in Guatemala. I am teaching in a school that educates the indiginous mayan children in a very poor community. The children who come to our schools probably wouldn´t attend school at all if it wasn´t for the project because their families are very poor and cannot afford school equipment and uniforms which are required for the local schools. Many of them work at the weekends in the fields on top of school and would be working full time if they didn´t come to our school. Many of them are incredibly malnourished and are given only coffee for breakfast (children as young as 5)
Our schools provide an education and an opportunity to improve their life chances. The children also get to be children at school and celebrate their birthdays, play and laugh. They are incredible children and in the time I have been here I have seen how important it is that the projects continue.
Due to the tight budget the projects have, the need for extra funding for simple school equipment and scholarships for the kids to progress in school, a group of us are undertaking a challenge to climb 4 volcanoes in 5 days. It will be a huge challenge and an incredible experience.
