My story

All - Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!  I so appreciate it (and so do school children in Ghana).  Please consider taking 5 minutes (right now!) to make a donation.

By now you probably know I am raising funds for Sabre Trust (www.sabretrust.org / www.busrun.org) to bring education supplies from the UK to Ghana.  This is a cost effective way to move supplies (and a truck) from Europe to Western Africa.  Obviously one of the things you can do to help would be to donate to this great cause.  Sabre Trust is an extremely small charity meaning your dollars will go far.  Very far.  If you want to donate online, this is the place!  Please note that unfortunately Sabre Trust is a UK charity, so donations may or may not be tax deductible in the US.  On this site you will have to donate in GB Pounds.  Approximate amounts are below.  (Alternatively you can send me a check (addressed to me due to the GBP/USD conversion unfortunately)  1301 20th Street NW, Apt 901, Washington, DC, 20036.

Please note an approximate exchange rate - $1USD = 0.60 GBP.  Therefore, a 31 or 32GBP donation equals about $50.  12.5 GBP equals approximately $20 and 47 GBP equals approximately $75.  Obviously the exchange rate changes frequently; these are estimates as of late September.  Feel free to visit www.xe.com

What else can you do to help?  Or if you can't donate, please consider forwarding this website to two or three of your friends/other family members.  If they could donate a few dollars too, it would really help me meet my goal.  Every little bit really helps, especially with such a small charity as Sabre Trust.

Below I've included information on Sabre Trust and what I will be doing.

Sabre Trust Info:
Supporting Africa By Rural Endeavours

The Sabre Charitable Trust is a small charity working on a big issue: Education. Through our Whole School Improvement Programme we are working with the local education authorities to make school a better place for Ghanaian children and encourage them to stay in education for longer.

By building and improving schools, ensuring that sufficient teaching and learning materials are available, and supporting fun extra curricular activities, we are helping to build a better future for school children in Ghana.

Since its creation, the Sabre Trust has focused its attention on the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) District in Ghana’s Central Region. KEEA District has a rich cultural heritage, being home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, but it suffers from all of the typical socio-economic development problems that afflict much of rural Ghana. The poverty of the district is reflected in the lack of resources to support education and youth initiatives – rural schools typically lack teaching and learning materials, and many school buildings are in need of significant infrastructure improvements.
The Sabre Trust operates three complementary programmes in Ghana and the UK to deliver against these goals:
Whole School Improvement Programme to improve the delivery of education services in the KEEA District by targeting five aspects of the school environment
Schools for Schools Programme which supports partnerships between UK and Ghanaian schools; and through them we facilitate information exchange and cultural awareness building.
Integrated Development Experience Africa Programme which aims to match the skills of international volunteers to the needs of partner communities and the projects implemented by the above two programmes.

The Bus Run Info (my program):
In late October 2009 1 vehicle, 12 passengers and 2 expedition leaders will tackle the journey overland from Marrakech, Morocco to Elmina, Ghana.

A five-week road-trip from Morrocco to Ghana with a purpose. This is no ordinary overland expedition: the Bus Run combines real adventure with delivering much needed resources to rural communities in Ghana. Education resources will be on board and distributed upon arrival in Ghana amongst the communities we work with. The vehicle itself will also play a vital role in allowing the schools in these communities to access ICT and sound recording equipment in support of school partnership links, as it will be converted into a Techno Truck on arrival.

The journey itself is spectacular and involves over 3,000 miles of driving. Some of the roads are good, others terrible and in some places there are none. Taking in the Atlas mountains of Morocco to the sands of the Sahara, the bustling markets of Mali through to the fabled town of Timbuktu, and an opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Dogon country, Mopti and the river Niger, culminating with the lush rainforests of Ghana and its empty palm fringed beaches. Those on board will certainly get to see a lot of what West Africa has to offer, it's sights, smells and sounds in their purest forms.

Since I won't have to spend this on this year's Christmas Party, I can donate it to this worthy cause. Best of luck. Donation by Francis Stefanski 16/10/09
