In August 2007 Steve Mead contracted acute adult lymphoblastic leukaemia. Steve had never smoked a cigarette, touched a drop of alcohol and was only 22yrs old when diagnosed. The fact that this awful illness can affect anyone, anytime could never been more highlighted. After battling for 21 months Steve sadly lost his life in May 2009.
Le Mead was created in 2007 and now 3 yrs old we are determined to continue to raise money to help save lives that are being lost to leukaemia. The treatments are out there, and we need to get them delivered to patients like Steve to help them get through the hardest of battles.
This years Le Mead challenge will prove to be a seriously testing and physically demanding one.
Steve Mead was a huge petrol head and always wanted to drive what is commonly known as "the best driving road in the world" – the Stelvio Pass in Italy. Well, Team Le Mead shall be riding this road in memory of Steve…on BIKES! A 4 day, 300 mile cycling challenge will take place from September 5 – 8 and an 18 strong Team Le Mead. This unique ride will see the team take on the Dolomite mountain region of the Alps and will see them reaching altitudes of 8000ft on road bikes conquering constant mountain climbs on days 2,3 and 4. The team will be cycling from Venice to Milan via Switzerland and day 2 of the ride includes a 15 mile climb up the Stelvio Pass in a challenge that dwarves last years L2P. And if that’s not enough, this route we are taking has NEVER been done before!
Please have a look at the pictures to see what awaits Team Le Mead as we embark on Le Mead’s toughest and biggest journey yet. Let these pictures be our way of showing you what we are taking on this year. As a Team we are asking you to sponsor us with anything you can afford as we again raise money for our partners, the Geoff Thomas Foundation.
The team have already started their intense training period in preparation of what will be an incredibly hard challenge as well as an emotional one as Smead was so keen to drive this road in his beloved Mitsubishi Evo. Certainly reaching the top of the Stelvio Pass will bring a tear to the eye as we ride with Steve firmly in our minds.
On 15 May it is a year since Steve passed away and I again thank all of you for your continued support to Team Le Mead and it is down to you all that we are raising such fantastic sums of money for charity in a bid to help other sufferers of this awful illness.
WWW.LEMEAD.CO.UK will have continued updates up to and during the challenge as well as news on this years Le Mead events. We are also now on Facebook under the name ‘Le Mead’ and on Twitter - @Le_Mead.
Thank you all for your support and please contact
matt@lemead.co.uk if you have any messages, questions or ways in which you can help Le Mead.
Ciao!
