The first ever Brighton Marathon will be held on Sunday 18th April 2010 and my sister and I have successfully secured places to run the 26.2 miles That’s 26.2 MILES!!!!!! What the hell were we thinking?????
Well there is an extremely good reason we have decided to put ourselves through this (both the actual run and the training), we have chosen to raise money for a charity very, very close to our hearts - The Royal Brompton & Harefield Charitable Fund.
As many of you know my eldest daughter Honor was born with Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction, and spent the first 5 weeks of her life at The Royal Brompton Hospital. Three of which were spent in the Intensive Care Unit, before we were moved to the High Dependency Unit. We spent another week in our local hospital before finally taking our beautiful baby girl home, with a bag full of medicines that was bigger than her. What an introduction to the world!
We are eternally grateful to the Royal Brompton Hospital and it's amazing staff that helped care for both Honor and the rest of our family during this extremely difficult time. Their expertise saved her life and their professionalism, compassion and support was invaluable. The pictures I have included tell the miraculous story of our gorgeous little girl, who you would never tell just from looking at her now how poorly she once was, and prove just how fabulous the Royal Brompton is. Honor is still under the care of a consultant at the Royal Brompton, with regular check-ups now every 6 months, and continues to take medication everyday. At her last check-up in October we received some fantastic news, that her heart function had improved and her medication was to remain the same, fingers crossed that when we return for our next visit in April the results are equally as good.
Although our stay at the Brompton seemed an eternity, at the time, it was relatively short compared with some. There are children there who have never been home, babies undergoing open heart surgery at just a few days old, children having their 3rd, 4th or 5th operation, specialists, doctors and nurses working round the clock to care for extremely sick babies and children. Whilst at the Brompton we met some amazing families many of whom we have kept in touch with and now include as our friends, they too have children that have spent time at The RBH, many undergoing lifesaving operations, so this really is a charity very close to our hearts.
We would like to raise as much money as possible for this truly wonderful cause so please dig deep and donate now.
