My story

Dear all,

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page and supporting me in my effort to complete London Marathon 2012 and help to raise funds for a wonderful work of the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research.

The Dr Hadwen Trust is the UK's leading medical research charity funding exclusively non-animal techniques to replace animal experiments, benefiting people and animals. For more than 40 years, the DHT has funded over 140 research projects in some of the most advanced and successful human-relevant techniques in medical research including cancer, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, breast cancer, brain damage, Alzheimer's disease, asthma and more, all advancing cutting-edge science without animal experiments.

While some people claim vivisection is vital to medical progress, research shows the reality - animal experiments are misleading, can hold up medical progress and can harm human health. They are cruel, unreliable and unnecessary.

We all want modern science to succeed in finding cures and treatments for devastating health problems, yet in over 100 years of cruel and unnecessary animal experiments, we still don't have a cure for many diseases.

The reason why is that many human diseases do not exist in animals and the way an animal's body deals with disease is very different to the way our bodies do. The fundamental flaw of animal based research is 'species differences'. Using animals to study human conditions is not only unreliable but a terrible waste of an animal's life.

Some of the differences in the drug tollerance between humans and animals:

1) Paracetamol is toxic to cats.

2) Chimpanzees are essentially immune to HIV, common malaria and hepatitis B.

3) Penicilin is toxic to guinea pigs.

4) Aspirin causes birth defects in most animals, but not in people.

Yet every year in the UK alone staggering around 3 million terrified animals suffer and die in unreliable experiments, this is roughly one animal every 10 seconds! Animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, horses, rats and mice are poisoned, brain-damaged and given lethal diseases in a bid to find a cure to diseases we and only we as humans suffer.

Inside laboratories, terrified and suffering animals have their hearts and other vital organs deliberately damaged with toxic chemicals, causing severe disability, heart attacks are triggered in dogs by tying off their hearts' main blood supply and mice are given cancers by having human tumour cells transplanted under their skin, being genetically manipulated and they are being tormented in water mazes. Brain-damaged monkeys are forced to perform repetitive tasks in order to gain a 'reward' of food or water. Animals are shot and exposed to nerve gases and given addictive drugs. Those who do not die during the experiment itself are invariably killed so that their bodies can be examined. But this is not how we humans get ill in the first place!

The drugs passed as 'safe' in animal tests have caused side effects in people - ranging from skin rashes, nausea and diarrhoea, to blindness, birth defects, stroke and fatal liver failure.

Just a couple of examples include:

1) The first 5-year trial of an HIV vaccine 'Aidsvax' was declared a successs after tests on monkeys, but failed to protect 8,000 volunteers in the human trial from HIV infection.

2) In lab tests, the blockbuster painkiller Vioxx was shown to be protective of animals' hearts, yet when it was administered to human patients, 88-140,000 extra heart attacks ma have been caused by Vioxx in the five years since its introduction.

So why does animal research continue?

It has become a deeply-rooted habit, and scientists who oppose animal experiments may be unwilling to speak out publicly, for fear of damaging their reputation and carreer prospects. Pharmaceutical industry is run by huge corporations and as we all know money is a powerful commodity.

The good news is that advanced research methods are already replacing animal expriments with successful result which are more human-relevant. The Dr Hadwen Trust has been the driving force in funding these. The number of projects they are able to support is totally dependent on the donations they receive.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Please support invaluable work of the DHT and ask the medical charity you regularly support about their involvement in animal testing and withdraw your contributions until they stop using animals. We can make a change and by saving lives today to save lives tomorrow.

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.

Lenka xxx
