For those of you that have attended WPC, you will understand first-hand how full on it can be. So for WPC 2011, I have decided to raise money for a young boy named George. George is 10 years old and suffers from a condition called Global Developmental Delay (GDD). He is under the care of the Paediatric Neurology Service at Leicester Royal Infirmary. His dream is to travel to California, see Disney World and all the Stars…
To help raise money I won’t be drinking any alcohol throughout WPC and hope you will be kind enough to support George’s dream rather than buy me a drink ;-)
GDD is a static neurological condition, which has led to a developmental delay and unsteadiness of his gait. He also has weakness of his muscles at the shoulder and hip joint and as a consequence finds it difficult to walk long distances and to manage stairs. There is no underlying cure or treatment for George’s condition. In addition, George has problems with his understanding of social interaction and finds it difficult to interact with his peer group. He does not cope with any deviation from his normal routine and becomes extremely anxious. These behaviours are often seen in children who are on the autistic spectrum and George has been referred for a specialist assessment of this disorder. As a consequence of this, George needs a lot of supervision and input from his mother. She is a single parent and cares for George and his older sister.
