My story

Since opening our doors back in April 1996, Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary has provided a lifeline for some of Northern Irelandʼs least fortunate animals.

We provide a sanctuary for pets that, through no fault of their own, have become unwanted and/or unloved; we look after them until we can find them new, caring homes. To date we have rehomed approximately 15,000 cats and dogs but, as a sad reflection on our society, our kennels are always full.

Having started from a few farm outbuildings the Sanctuary has grown organically to its current size, which accommodates over 70 dogs and 60 cats. These buildings have served us well over the past 15 years, but  have now reached the point where they are barely fit for purpose. Indeed, winter 2010 was the harshest in our history and the animals suffered in their unheated, leaky kennels; each morning the staff had to break the ice on the dogsʼ water bowls. This state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue and the need to replace the existing run-down buildings with a purpose-built, heated facility has become more urgent than ever.

We are, then, delighted to announce that we are about to embark on our most ambitious project ever: to knock down the existing Sanctuary buildings and build the Sanctuary up again from ground level.

As of mid-July, our staff and animals will be moving to a temporary facility outside Ballyclare for several months, to allow for the demolition and replacement of all our current structures. We anticipate that we should be returning to our Hurtletoot home by early 2012 at the latest, where we and the animals will be able to enjoy a wholly new heated double block of dog kennels, cattery with outside runs and administration block.

Such a venture does not come cheaply though, and we estimate that the cost of  this work will be in the region of £450,000. Since our annual running costs exceed £220,000 we are initiating a separate “Buy A Brick” Appeal to fund this much-needed building and refurbishment work.

How to Take Part

There is a suggested donation of £5 per brick; however, it is entirely up to you how much you choose to donate.

As a thank you for your donation we will:

* Send you a brick certificate.

* Include your name in a Buy a Brick book which will be held in our reception and be accessible to all visitors.

* Give you the opportunity to personalise and commemorate your gift by including your name and a special message on our website.

Every contribution to the Buy a Brick Appeal will ensure that our residents, who may have suffered greatly before reaching us, are housed in comfortable, warm kennels before finding a loving home in which to spend the rest of their lives.
