Sustrans works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. Sustrans' flagship project is the National Cycle Network, creating over 12,000 miles of routes throughout the UK. Sustrans' work relies on the generous donations and regular gifts of 40,000 Supporters, and the support of charitable trusts, companies, the National Lottery and local authority programmes.

My story

Fellow citizens,

Imagine living in a world - or at least a neighbourhood - where walking, cycling and public transport were the easiest and most accessible ways of travelling.

Where all neighbourhoods had enough space for children to play in.

Where the way in which we move and interact with each other had health, sustainability and community at the centre.

A slightly slower, much happier world.

I'm for such a world, as most of you know. That's why I'm cycling 176 miles in 3 days for Sustrans, the UK's sustainable transport organisation, reponsible for the National Cycle Network and Safe Routes to School, among other great projects.

Here's what they say about themselves:

Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. Our vision is a world in which people choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment. Every day we are working on practical, innovative ways of dealing with the transport challenges that affect us all.

Sustrans aims to:

reduce the environmental and resource impacts of transport
enable people to choose active travel more often
provide car-free access to essential local services
create streets and public spaces into places for people to enjoy.

We work in three ways to achieve these aims:

we create public space focussed on access not mobility
we provide information and work directly with people to bring about behaviour change
we influence government policy by demonstrating that it is possible to change people's behaviour and by measuring the benefit of our work in terms of health, environment, quality of life and value for money.

This is not just about reducing car use - it's about a broader vision of public space which can literally make our lives happier. We all know it needs to happen. Any donations you make will go towards that vision.
