My story
Marianne Bjerke Blake, 28 June 1974 - 1 January 2012 Marianne was a truly remarkable person who inspired many along the way, thanks to her positive outlook, an absolute belief in her ability to overcome the great challenges she faced and a determination to live and enjoy every moment of life. Her kindness to family, friends and strangers alike is a rare quality that set her apart. She will be deeply missed, and forever loved. Marianne passed away very peacefully in her sleep just after midnight on New Years Eve 2011. She always told us she would make 2012 and we never doubted her for a moment. She had bravely fought an aggressive form of breast cancer for a remarkable five and a half years. Despite the serious fight on her hands, Marianne always enjoyed a perfectly positive outlook; she took the fight on and was determined to win. Marianne was always 100% clear in her mind she would eventually be cancer free. With such belief and an incredible will to live, we're certain this was a significant factor in her surviving such a long period while facing such an aggressive and relentless disease. Those who met with Marianne in the past 12 months would agree she always looked amazing (the picture you see above was taken just six months ago!). Always glamorous, she brought smiles and happiness into the lives of those she encountered, while fighting a disease which she kept in the background to her life. This was down to uncompromising will power. This will power was demonstrated in style when Marianne ran the London Marathon in April 2010 in a time of 4 hours 24 minutes, despite having cancer in both her brain and liver - a feat we think is unheard of. As reward, friends and family donated more than 17,000 pounds which was used to purchase a specific piece of equipment in the London cancer clinic and associated research laboratory that treated her throughout her journey. This determination was evident throughout her life; Marianne still holds four unbeaten Norwegian national swimming records achieved when she was younger, she ran with the Olympic Torch at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and was recently selected to run through London with the 2012 Summer Olympic Torch this July. In her career, she was promoted to a Director at Merrill Lynch at the same time as she was fighting metastatic cancer. This perfectly sums up her drive to achieve. Over the last few weeks of her life, this determination and belief was replaced with a form of peaceful acceptance and a great deal of love for her caring family around her. Despite the extremely difficult physical position she was in during the last few weeks, Marianne always managed a smile, a thumbs up and a kiss and a hug for us. It was clear to see she was happy, content and at peace. This page has been created for those that have expressed an interest in donating something in Marianne's memory. It's also for those who want to post a little message to her, in her memory. When running the 2010 marathon, Marianne researched and then chose to raise money for Dimbleby Cancer Care. This charity then sent the money on her behalf to purchase the research equipment associated with her clinic. I know she would be proud to continue to help this particular charity which is focused on helping people in similar situations as Marianne's. From our hearts, thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
