This summer, Mark Williams and Harry Saville are embarking upon a 2000 kilometre bicycle ride to help raise funds for the Laurie Engel Fund, which is part of the Teenage Cancer Trust. This epic adventure will see them travel from the Caen, in the north of France, to Terifa, in the south of Spain.
Laurie Engel was a smart, funny, charming, sparky, sporty boy. He grew up in the beautiful Golden Valley in Herefordshire. At the age of 11 he wanted to win Wimbledon, or failing that be a sports writer like his dad. The world appeared to be at his feet.
Then he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. Despite more than a year of intensive treatment, he died in September 2005, aged 13.
Both Harry and I attended Michaelchurch Escley primary school with Laurie and last year decided that we wanted to do something to help. We have never done anything like this before, but we decided that it would be a great challenge and hope to raise as much as possible to help the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The Teenage Cancer Trust provide funding for state-of-the-art units with facilities where teenage patients can have fun and entertain friends as well as having treatment. They aim to to provide these units at hospitals all around the country so that every teenage cancer patient can have access to one (each one costing around £2 million).
