My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Next summer (2010) I will be going to Uganda as part of one of 6 Lasallian Developing World Projects. All of these projects are centred around education with many part of long term plans for the development of facilities and schools in rural communities.

On this project, we will help to build a boys dormitory at Blessed Comboni School, in Kigumba, Uganda. LDWP has visited this school several times in the past, and built a hostel for girls in 2005. The parish covers a large area and has a large population, swollen by people displaced by the activities of the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) in the north of the country. Residential space is very important for schools such as this one, where children may have to travel very large distances and may not be able to attend at all as a result.

This is part of the same organisation as the project I participated in in 2008 when I spent 5 weeks in the South Indian province of Tamil Nadu: in a small village called Suranam. There we were involved in building a 3 classroom block which will help many children who do not have the chance to attend college or university to learn a trade.

I found this an amazing experience as did all of the group as we integrated into the local community and found the relationship we forged to be incredibly rewarding for all involved, despite linguistic and cultural barriers.

All the Lasallian Developing World Projects have the goal of improving education facilities - be that building classrooms themselves; rooms for pupils to allow poorer children the chance of education; or rooms for teachers to maintain and attract a high standard of education for the disadvantaged young people of these third world countries.

I successfully completed the Barrhead 10k on Sunday 20th September as a fund-raiser for this cause

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So I'd be really grateful for any donations you can offer, (and remember to Gift Aid if you're a taxpayer - it's free)
