Story
My daughter Molly was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney at the age of 8. It had spread extensively throughout her body, and we were told she had only a 40% chance of survival.
She had to undergo surgery and brutal chemotherapy and radiotherapy to get rid of the cancer, and today she has been cancer free for nearly 8 years.
She is covered with the scars of her physical battle with cancer, but the hidden, psychological cost is less visible.
She suffered crippling anxiety and low self-esteem following her treatment, which no NHS or charitable organisations were equipped to support her with.
The Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust, however, were able to take a very shy, anxious 9 year old, put her on a boat with a group of similar children, and enable her to realise that she was strong and capable of anything.
Molly is now a happy, normal teenage girl. She still goes on trips with the Trust every year, and every year comes back stronger and more able to cope with the ongoing challenges that children face post cancer treatment.
Without there ongoing support, her life would be much more restricted, and a much darker place.
I can't thank them enough for how they've helped her for all these years, but i hope to raise enough to be able to send another child on a journey that lasts far beyond the actual sailing.
