Hi everybody

I work on the publicity for the charity Neurocare and part of this job is to speak to loads of amazing people who have been affected by a wide range of neurological illnesses. It can be quite upsetting hearing how these conditions have impacted their life and the life of their family and friends, and on a number of occasions I've been known to shed a tear when writing up these stories.

Neurocare is a charity which supports and raises money for the Neurosciences Department at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The charity buys very high tech equipment, which would not otherwise be provided by the NHS. As a result of Neurocare’s contributions, Sheffield has some of the best most advanced equipment in the UK, but the charity still has lots of work to do.

Neurocare helps patients who have suffered head injury, strokes or have cancers of the nervous system. It also helps those with brain tumours, diseases of the nervous system, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Epilepsy and much much more. Neurocare's patients come from all over the country to be treated by specialist teams.

Neurocare has also invested in facilities for patients and carers, including improvements to waiting areas. Lesley Eland, chief exec, hopes to make the department the best in the country – not just in terms of equipment but also facilities and support for patients, their families and carers. www.neurocare.org.uk

If there is anything I've learned from working for this charity, it's that you can never be sure what's round the corner. I've written case studies on patients who had a clean bill of health, to wake up with pins and needles one day and be diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. We all might need this equipment some day to help treat and cure these horrible illnesses.

So I've decided to take part in a Firewalk! Eek! It's on 12 November at the Norfolk Arms, Ringinglow. Please dig as deep as you can, I'm not the type of person to do anything like a firewalk - I'm far too sensible - but feel I should do something to raise a bit of money for this fab charity. I'm really scared! No backing out now! And no heels allowed!
