One will inevitably ask the question why does a 70 year old deafblind man, who has recently recovered from a broken thigh bone, want to climb Ben Nevis? What’s the attraction in it? Well, there are two and these are; to raise funds for Deafblind Scotland to build a new Resource and Training Centre (called Field of Dreams because the members have dreamed about it since 2001), and also because it is something I have been wanting to do for many years!
Becoming a member of Deafblind Scotland (DBS) in 1997 had a hugely positive effect on my life. Thanks to the Guide Communicator service provided by them, I was able to interact more freely with the wider world, getting involved with local health and area council meetings, participating in relevant and regular Committee meetings at the Scottish Executive (now Scottish Government). I became a director of DBS in 2001 and have raised funds for them by abseiling the Forth Bridge & rowing the Union Canal!
