                                                                          SONIA HEATON

Sonia’s first contact with Ward 7 at Bradford Royal Infirmary and the Annette Fox Leukaemia Research Fund was when she was officially diagnosed with Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia in 1998 by the then Doctor, now Professor Liakat Parapia.

Sonia underwent a bone marrow stem cell transplant at Leeds General Infirmary in November 1999, followed by further treatment at .

Sonia then enjoyed 7 years of remission until July 2007 when Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia was diagnosed once again.  She was offered an opportunity in September of that year to take part in a research programme but unfortunately, the 16 week course of treatment proved to be too aggressive and after 12 weeks it was stopped.

In July 2008, Sonia was admitted into the new St James’s Leeds Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and on 15 August underwent a donor transplant.

Many months of arduous treatment followed, with much care and affection from the team on Ward 89, to whom the family will be eternally grateful.

Unfortunately, Sonia lost her brave and courageous fight on the 20 September 2009, having been moved to the ICU some days earlier.
