My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi I'm Michael.  I was born with a rare genetic immune deficiency called Kostmann Syndrome.  For the last 18 years I have had lots of infections needing hospital visits and intravenous antibiotics and GCSF treatments to make my bone marrow make cells to fight infections.  Because of my medical condition I was at risk of developing Leukaemia.  I had a bone marrow transplant on Ward 23 at Newcastle General Hospital on the 23 April 2009.

Without a transplant my future was uncertain.   I would have continued to get infections and spend weeks attached to infusion pumps for the rest of my life.  I knew that one day I might be unlucky and not survive an infection or seriously damage an organ or even lose a limb.  I knew that if I developed Leukaemia I would probably end up needing chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant anyway.  I have always wondered how long I would live and all I ever  wanted was to have a normal life and be able to look forward to my future instead of dreading it.

Without the brilliant doctors, nurses and staff on Ward 23 and the Bubble Foundation, people like me would have to suffer for the rest of their lives.  I can't thank them enough for giving me a chance of a better life. It is now nearly six months since my transplant and I am feeling better each day.  I still have some way to go before I am through it all but i'm getting there.

The Bubble Foundation help people like me and their parents get through the transplant.  They provide games, tv's, dvd's, laptops and toys etc for the patients and provide furnished flats for parents to live in during your stay in isolation. When you leave isolation you all live in a half way house which is furnished by the Bubble Foundation, until you are able to go home. The Liaison Team then take over your long term care.  They also provide medical equipment for the Ward and help fund research.

I want to raise money for Ward 23 and The Bubble Foundation so they can keep helping people like me and saving lives. Please help by making a donation thank you.  Michael :-)
