Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As many of you will know I (John) worked as a paediatric doctor with VSO in Malawi in 2001. One of the things that took a bit of getting used to was that children die in Africa. Children rarely die here in the UK.

There are many reasons for the difference in mortality rates. Families are much poorer, children often malnourished and are frequently delayed in arriving at the hospital until they are really very sick. I realised then that we were not very good at treating these children on arrival.

I was really interested then when I heard about these ETAT (emergency, triage, assessent, treatment) courses, developed in Malawi, and now being rolled out to other countries by WHO, which train local health porfessionals in the recognition and treatment of really sick children as well as how to organise their emergency departments. It has been proven to work in reducing child deaths.

Childrens Medical Care Malawi is a charity run by a group of paediatricians all of whom have lived and worked in Malawi. We would like to train more clinicians in "ETAT". I taught on a courses in Malawi in 2008. We would really like to enable more Malawians to take a lead on this and help them to adequately stock their A&E departments. Doing things that you and I take for granted here in the UK.

Have a look at the website http://childrensmedicalcaremalawi.org.uk/ for more details.

I hope you will agree that this is a far better cause than that John Lewis gift list!
