Story

Well if you have clicked this far I hope you are keen to find out more about what MSRRF (Multiple Sclerosis Research and Relief Fund) are up to now, so thank you so much for showing an interest.

I do hope that once you have read our Hydrotherapy Pool story that, even in these times of great economic difficulty, you may be inspired to make a donation towards the Pool, no matter how small. Every single penny will help.

As one Service- User said to me after having seen the initial plans for the Hydrotherapy Pool,” I just can’t believe it, it would be a dream come true; if we manage to get a Hydrotherapy Pool I will once again be able to swim and, for the first time in so many years, be able to walk, albeit in the water, on my own”. (Service- User from Benmar House December 2012)

There are many benefits to hydrotherapy such as; improved mobility improved because people are able to perform activities in the pool that they are unable to perform on dry land. With the appropriate progression of exercises, these activities, such as walking or running, will be able to be performed outside the pool. As well as improved mobility it is also a great way of exercising without the worry of becoming unstable and falling. With the resistance of the water and dynamic exercise within the water it can improve muscle strength, balance and co ordination. Hydrotherapy can be used to speed up the recovery of patients that are unable to weight-bear or can only partially weight-bear following surgery or injury, by increasing range of movement and maintaining muscle strength.

In addition to the above hydrotherapy can also:

  • increase mobility
  • reduce pain and muscle spasm
  • improve and maintain joint range of movement
  • strengthen weak muscle groups
  • increase physical fitness and functional tolerances
  • re-educate normal movement patterns
  • improve balance
  • improve co-ordination
  • improve posture
  • improve self confidence
  • stimulate circulation

Hydrotherapy is an effective way to treat all ages with neurological and orthopedic conditions. It is especially enjoyed by young people because it is fun and gives them a freedom of movement only experienced in a Hydrotherapy Pool.
Such a facility would compliment and enhance our extensive service offer. The Charity would be the only MS service in the North East offering such a facility free of charge.
