Story
NCT began nearly 60 years ago and continues to support parents regardless of their circumstances. Over the years we have amassed a vast collection of fascinating materials that document the history of the National Childbirth Trust. Not only does this provide a timeline of the charity's work but also a body of knowledge about women's role in society and how this has evolved since the 1950s.
The NCT Archive Project is a group of staff and volunteers who have fought to preserve these artefacts before they deteriorated further. We are very lucky to have been able to deposit these materials at the Wellcome Library where they are being conserved and catalogued, ready to be opened to researchers in September 2015.
As part of the Archive Project, we are working on recording interviews with key members of NCT's history and volunteers and practitioners currently working for NCT.
At NCT's volunteer and practitioner event Babble Live! 2014 which took place in Birmingham we brought a state-of-the-art portable recording booth to record attendees' stories about their experiences of birth, motherhood and how NCT supported them. We had 52 people record their experiences of NCT and comments included "it's been a journey of self-discovery. I fell in love with NCT for ever!"; "I felt quite empowered going into the birthing experience"; "...normalised breastfeeding and made me more confident doing it"; "NCT is a fantastic resource".
As we receive no government funding, NCT is reliant on the generosity of the public and this project is no exception. We now plan to do further interviews with users and practitioners of NCT services and NCT Archive Project must raise funds to pay for recording equipment and travel costs for the interviewer. We would greatly appreciate any donation you can make towards this to help us capture memories of the past six decades.
No donation is too small and your contribution will make a huge difference to the final archive that will be available to future generations.
