My story

Please Give generously to help new parents and their babies have a better start. We will use your donation to support local parents who are in need. The Little Ducks Project has been set up by North Staffs NCT. It relies entirely on grants and donations and is run by volunteers.

Can you imagine...

  • Not having any winter maternity clothes to cover your bump?
  • Not having shampoo and body wash to take with you into hospital?
  • Cutting up scraps of material to use as sanitary towels and breast-pads following the birth?
  • Being unable to leave the house because you do not have nappies and baby clothes for your precious little one?

Li and Taim* arrived in Stoke-on-Trent in 2006 seeking asylum from political persecution. They spoke very little English and whilst awaiting the decision on their asylum claim, they were unable to work. When their baby son was born in March 2007 the three of them were living in one room in a house with three other families. They had no clothes for their son, no pushchair, no nappies, in fact they were barely able to feed themselves on the food vouchers given out to them in benefit.

For parents like Li and Taim the joyful event of a baby's birth comes with challenges many of us can not even imagine. Here in Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas are many mothers and families in real need of basic items that most of us take for granted. Some are migrants, asylum seekers, teenage mums or victims of domestic violence who have had to leave home quickly.

Aileen couldn't take it any longer. Her boyfriend had always been a bit rough but since she'd become pregnant it had got out of control several times. Now she had a three month old son to think of. The black eye and broken finger of this afternoon could be the least of her troubles if he came home in a foul mood this evening. She had to leave. Only able to manage one suitcase and the baby in his car seat, Aileen had to leave the rest of her lovingly chosen baby items behind.
