WE MADE IT!!!

The total distance we cycled in 8 days was 498.38 miles and our total ascent was 12,645 feet - roughly the equivalent of cycling up Snowdon three and a half times! No wonder our legs ache....

If you don't know why we did it please read on:

In January 2009 I read an article by the violinist David Juritz about how he had busked his way around the world in 2007, raising £25,000 to start the charity Musequality which helps to provide instrumental lessons for children in some of the poorest areas of the world. I was inspired, and contacted David to find out how best to help. Having worked full-time as Head of Strings at the Portsmouth Grammar School for ten years, I was eligible to apply for a sabbatical and, the school governors having agreed, I offered to teach the violin at the Tender Talents School for Aids orphans in Uganda during June and July 2010.
I am organising several fund-raising events at school involving both colleagues and pupils, but my own personal challenge is a sponsored tandem bike ride from Portsmouth to Ingoldmells in Lincolnshire, where my first recorded ancestor, Peter de Ingoldmeles, lived in 1234. I had always meant to go there – a friend told me that it has the largest caravan site in the country! - but had never found the time. This April being our silver wedding anniversary, my husband, Nick, and I decided that we would pay it a visit. We bought a tandem last summer and have really enjoyed riding it – you can go faster (especially downhill) and also chat whilst riding – and although the person on the front (known as the 'Captain') is responsible for steering, braking and changing gear, the person on the back (the 'Stoker') is usually the navigator. There is absolutely no truth in the popular belief that the stoker can take it easy on the back – I've tried many times and Nick can spot it straight away! Please help us to raise money for Musequality with this endeavour. It's approximately 500 miles from Southsea to Ingoldmells and back and we hope to make the journey during April. Many thanks,Jane & Nick
