Cancer has affected most lives as many of us know at least one person who has fought and won / fought and lost their battle.
For those who are losing their fight, places like the McMillan Palliative Care Unit can really make a difference to them and their families. This unit wants to expand in size and extend their services. The money raised will help towards them achieving these goals.
Saturday 8th August,
Similarly to the TV Show,IT'S A KNOCK OUT, this is a team event where we will be required to complete the entire circuit of games against our competitors with a target of 40 points
There will be photographic evidence of our achievements posted on this site for you to see and all sponsors will be informed of how much money were able to raise for the unit.
Personal Note:
As some may know, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. In 2009 he collapsed and was admitted into hospital. Whilst in the hospital, we were informed that the medical staff would from now on, only be "treating the symptoms".
By this time he was too ill to travel anywhere by ambulance but fortunately, the Hospital had a MacMillan’s Palliative Care Unit on the complex where he was eventually admitted.
In the unit there was unrestricted access to him by telephone and 24hr visiting (unlike the 3hr, twice a day restrictions on the hospital wards with a "3 visitors per bed" policy). There was a television and portable DVD players to view the library of DVDs in the unit. I was able to bring and store food that he liked (Oxtail!) for mealtimes. We were able to decorate the walls with photographs of family members so that he was always surrounded by us.
There was a completely different atmosphere in the unit with smiles and greetings from the nursing staff/doctors, tea and coffee, books and magazines always available for visitors. They offered an oral history service which gave opportunities for people to make life history recordings whilst receiving palliative care. Some people chose to record their life story as a family record and found dignity and appreciation as an individual in the process. It wasn’t "Home" but it had a homely feel. In addition, they offer a plethora of support services from caring through to bereavement.
My dad spent his last weeks under their care and despite this being a saddening story to tell, statistically, we were fortunate to have been admitted.
Example:
Sheffield has a population of about 560,000. There are 33 hospice beds with a waiting list for admission, inevitably, patients died before admission. These statistics are reflected throughout the country.
These units are being set up across the country and expanded not just for cancer patients but to provide End Of Life Care for those suffering from terminal illnesses, keeping their symptoms under control so that they do not experience unnecessary pain and giving patients and families a quality of life they wouldn’t otherwise receive on a hospital ward or often at home.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
