Story

The Zeppelin War: the archaeology of the First Blitz

Hosted by

HM Tower of London

Between early 1915 and late 1918 the Germans mounted the first strategic bombing campaign in history. London was the main target, but bombs were dropped across wide swathes of Britain, even as far north as Scotland.

The British response was to develop history’s first comprehensive air-defence system, one that in almost every respect anticipated the equally pioneering system created in the late 1930s.

In a sense, between 1915 and 1918, it turned the whole of Britain into a single vast battlefield.

This lecture will summarise the story of the 1915-1918 air war over Britain and report on the results of the first archaeological project designed to investigate its remains in the landscape.

Neil Faulkner works as a freelance lecturer, editor, writer, excavator and occasional broadcaster. He lectures widely in archaeology, ancient history, classical civilisation, modern history, and current affairs. He is Editor of the popular magazine Military History Monthly, an Honorary Research Fellow at Bristol University, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
