My story
Welcome to Ginger to Jinja.
I'm raising money for the charity Agapao International.
I have volunteered to join them on a trip to Jinja in Uganda in April 2012.
Louise Chicot, the CEO of Agapao International, came to the ONE Planet shop that I manage, at 54 Abbey Street in Accrington, to discuss supplying us with fairly traded gifts from the tribal women's groups with whom she works in Uganda.
As listened to her story I got butterflies in my insides.
I have wanted to go to Africa for a long while. But not as a tourist. I have wanted to go and give of myself and the grounded integrity of Louise's organisation was so inspiring that, before the meeting was halfway through, I had volunteered to join her and share my skills in any way that I could.
As a representative of One Planet I intend to meet with local craftswomen to source gifts for sale in the shop, where I can be sure of their provenance and that a fair price goes directly to the communities who produced them.
Some of you visiting this page know me very well and some of you hardly at all. Agapao means 'I love you, unconditionally,' and i hope this appeal strikes a chord within you all.
If it does, please sponsor me with whatever funds you can afford, and be assured that your investment will be used to empower communities and enhance the standard of living for women and children who are overjoyed with gratitude for a pencil or a pair of shoes.
