TCB appeal for donation to help the Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement in the Indian State of Odisha (previously Orissa) affected by cyclone last October:
A devastating cyclone with wind gust of 240 kilo meters per hour hit the Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement in the Indian State of Odisha (previously Orissa) in October 2013. It caused extensive damages to crops, homes and communication links. According to the damage assessment conducted by the settlement officials, almost 90 per cent of the maize crops were destroyed. The cyclone also uprooted many fruit trees and falling trees and electricity poles damaged homes as well as cattle sheds. The tragedy got all the more worse because for most of the 3,000 Tibetans living in the settlement, farming is their main source of livelihood.
The Central Tibetan Relief Committee (CTRC) of the Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration based in Dharamsala, India, says: “The devastation perpetrated by the storm has posed a huge hardship to the farmers by plunging them into debt as they have taken loans from commercial banks and cooperative societies to meet the cost of agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, labour and so on. The estimated loss caused by the calamity is approximately 20 million Indian rupees (equivalent to US $ 333,333.00).”
As one of our aims and objectives is to relieve poverty and hardship amongst Tibetans in exile, the Tibetan Community in Britain (TCB) would also like to do our bid to help the Tibetan victims of this devastating cyclone. We, therefore, request as many Tibetans and others living in the UK to donate generously through Just Giving. We appreciate your kindness and sense of responsibility, and assure you that any amount you donate will go a long way in helping Tibetans in Odisha to rebuild their lives.
Many thanks
