My story
Hello there!
Right, so on 15th April I completed this relentless 26.2 mile slog in 3:55!
I felt fantastic for the first half of the race, it was a glorious day and I was in one wonderful mood! - at around mile 16 though my mood started to turn to mild irritation, and from here on in, a strange, progressive mix of pain, anger and grit determination, head down and brows furrowed, my feet actually felt like balls of fire and my legs and brain had a fully blown metaphorical fist fight. No happy bunny! This was relieved with just 200m to go, as I heard a great wail 'Olivi-aaaaahrahhhh!', and steady chant 'Liv Liv Livrahhhhhh!!!!!' which I recognised as my lovely family! Hurrah!! (The time was a little later than I predicted! ;)

I'm raising money for Crohn's and Colitis UK, as after diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 5 years ago, it finally gained an upper hand in May 2011 when I ended up in A&E in a bit of a pickle!
Long story short, after a week or so my haemoglobin levels dropped to critical and major 'life-saving' surgery was performed to remove my large intestine. (A procedure I had no idea even existed - not much fun!)
Crohn's and Colitis UK were a very important part of my recovery. Their advice and support network was integral to helping me deal with the initial shock of the procedure and in managing the change to my day-to-day life.
I was advised that it could take up to 12 months to fully recover. However, I was determined to get my strength back and within 4 months I'd raced a 5km PB, competed in a 10km adventure race within 6, followed earlier this year by my first half marathon and 21 mile road race.
My hope is that by running the 2012 Brighton marathon I might encourage and inspire other people with these conditions, to let them know they are not alone, and demonstrate that having IBD doesn't need to hold you back.
Unfortunately, however, these lifelong conditions are often exhausting, painful and unpredictable. They affect around 1 in 250 people in the UK, including many children, and the impact on education, work, social and family life can be devastating.
Almost all the funding for vital research, into providing better specialised patient care and into finding in a cure, comes entirely from UK fundraisers and donations.
Please help me raise money for Crohn's and Colitis UK by sponsoring me to complete the very real challenge of running 26.2 miles!

Crohn’s and Colitis UK is the new name for The National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC). Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis often start in teenagers and young adults and last a lifetime. The Charity provides support to those affected and raises funds for research into a cure.
